buzy bee of A

this week i started a new job so i've been fairly busy, but for now i will post this cool little audio player for 'Alone: the home recordings of Rivers Cuomo' found at weezer.com. this will probably be the last (and possibly the best) album i buy in 2007.

Television, Musicals, and More

I've begun to realize that it is not to hard to create a television drama that i would enjoy, and i wonder how well these rules holds universally.

show i like seem to need 4 of these 5 things (in no particular order):
1) a bad-ass and/or rebel of some sort
2) a woman i find very attractive (or multiple)
3) clever writing
4) a unique general idea on which the series is based (this usually helps get me to start watching in the first place)
5) something else that makes the show unique (the order the story is told, the way its filmed, etc)

from this list i realize a couple things: a) i'm pretty superficial when it comes to television, b) there is still a lot of really bad television.

so i'm going to talk for a bit about a new television show that i really enjoy: pushing daisies. this is the only show in its first season that i've actually started watching this year, last year there were several (heroes, dexter, 30 rock, flight of the conchords, and studio 60 on the sunset strip [although that was cancelled]).

It's a dramedy that centers on the life of a man gifted with the mysterious ability to bring the dead back to life by touching them. however, there are a couple of conditions: if a person is revived for more than one minute, someone nearby dies; and if he touches the revived person a second time, they die permanently.

a few things really stand out about pushing daisies, first from a purely visual standpoint, this is the most beautifully filmed television show i have seen (the use of colors is just brilliant). i don't believe tim burton has ever done television, but if he did it would probably look somewhat like pushing daisies. second, the writing while strange, is also incredibly smart and funny. so i think thats three things on my list i wonder what number four is...

oh right, anna friel

catch pushing daisies wednesday on ABC but i suggest catching up here. abc.com actually has a pretty great site for streaming shows (even offering some in HD), if only they had more worth watching.

('is this a music blog?' 'i'm not sure dude, but anna friel is hot')

Musical Monday

I'm gonna call this the first musical monday, now i don't plan on featuring a musical every monday (if i did that i'd probably have to stop posting on mondays by 2008)

i had the pleasure of seeing this a couple months ago, and thought it was great. being a causal fan of 'oldies' and the four seasons going into the play, i really enjoyed it. I had no idea how much music of theirs i had heard and also how influential a group like the four seasons was. plus frankie valli really did have an incredible voice. i've decided to include (above) three tracks from the broadway cast recording, enjoy!

Sunday, December 2

Welcome!

I was planning on starting a music blog as a new years resolution to put my thoughts to use (or at least write some of them down), but i decided why wait.

let me tell you a bit about myself...

1) In the past year i graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a degree in Management Science.

2) I'm 22 years old and have no idea what i want to do with the rest of my life (well i do but quarterbacking the San Diego Chargers is probably a bit unrealistic at this point)

3) I'm kind of a pop culture junkie, but that is a side effect from my mass intake of television, movies, music, sports and to a certain extent books.

4) I love to use parenthesis and sometimes forget to capitalize words (but you probably noticed that already)

5) i tried to do this a few years ago, and failed miserably (i.e. stopped), so hang in there as i work out the kinks and try to figure out how to make this good.

perhaps now i should explain the future content of this site. right now i'm thinking daily themes (i.e. Throwback Thursday, etc.), where i will proceed to post hopefully some rare tracks, b-sides, covers, live songs, and of course some of my favorites off of specific albums. all the while interjecting information and my thoughts/opinions on the artist's that i feature, current events, and life in general.

so i know what you're thinking alot of writing, where is the music? well i've been struggling with that as i type this, the first post will probably say a lot about what is to come on this blog... i've decided i'm going to go with a new album by one of san diego's finest bands.

01. Yer Motion
02. I Want Burns
03. Reason To Leave
04. Cheat Me Slowly
05. Sunshine
06. Clean Up Mission Hills
07. Goldiloches
08. Open Face Darrell
09. Endless Bummer
10. Wings
11. Madachu(featuring Sean Mackin on Violin)
12. The Leg
13. Yer Time (itunes only bonus track)

i have waited probably close to three years for this album to come out and it finally is here...sort of. its available on itunes plus (for a pretty reasonable 7.99!), but the physical album has yet to come out. to fully understand the problems the band had releasing the album check out their blog. long story short, they were signed by capitol records, recorded their sophomore album, the label kept pushing its release back further and further, then dropping the band before releasing the record. the band decided to go ahead and release the record themselves, and i'm glad they did.

here are a few of my early favorites from the record:

I Want Burns - the third released incarnation of the song, a great song originally and they always manage to improve it just a bit.

The Leg - i have to admit i'm a bit of a sucker for a sports-themed song. it's kind of like a sincere "lonesome kicker."

Yer Time - this track i believe will be itunes only, and is definitely interesting. i can see why it's not a part of the actual record, as it's very old song that they re-recorded with an accordion as the main track.
